Average Funeral Cost in California: Benchmarks and 2026 Prices
Compare funeral cost benchmarks with 2026 California price lists, then budget for cemetery charges, cremation fees and other extras.

For a traditional funeral with viewing and burial, $8,300 is a useful starting benchmark—but it is a 2023 national median, not a California average or an all-in burial price. The comparable national median for a funeral with viewing and cremation was $6,280. Neither includes cemetery interment, a grave marker or cash-advance items such as flowers and newspaper notices. The burial figure includes a metal casket but not a burial vault. These figures come from the NFDA’s 2023 study, summarized by the Montana Funeral Directors Association.
For simpler arrangements, the cost can be substantially lower. Published 2026 California price lists below show direct-cremation options from $998 to $2,395, with different inclusions. These are individual provider examples—not a statewide average or the limits of what you might pay.
The most useful budget separates three things: the funeral home’s services, burial or cremation merchandise, and the final resting place.
California prices by arrangement
Prices below are from lists available as of October 7, 2026. Confirm the current total for your circumstances before authorizing services.
| Arrangement | Published California example | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct cremation, without viewing or ceremony | Cremation Society of Los Angeles, Bell Gardens: $998, effective January 2026 | Includes its cardboard container, transportation within 30 miles, refrigeration and crematory fee up to 250 pounds. Ask about certificates, permits and applicable extras. |

Mileage beyond 25 miles and certain other charges are extra. |
| Direct cremation | Price Funeral Chapel, Citrus Heights: $2,395 package, effective July 3, 2026 | Includes a minimum container and urn, crematory fee under 300 pounds, up to seven days of sheltering and listed filing fees, taxes and surcharge. Ask about transfer surcharges and certified death-certificate costs. |
| Cremation with a memorial service | Cremation Society of Los Angeles: $2,295, Monday–Friday | The listed option includes an attendant, chapel, reception room and recorded music. Confirm merchandise and other extras. |
| Immediate burial, without ceremony | Cremation Society of Los Angeles: $1,800 with its minimum cloth-covered casket | Tax is additional; cemetery property and burial charges must be budgeted separately. |
| Funeral with visitation and burial services | Price Funeral Chapel: $4,995 Complete Funeral Service package | Includes weekday visitation, funeral and graveside services, physical care and vehicles. For traditional burial, package pricing requires buying the casket from this funeral home; the casket costs extra. Cemetery charges are separate. |

A cremation with viewing is not the same purchase as direct cremation. The $6,280 national benchmark includes preparation of the body, viewing and a funeral ceremony. It should not be used to judge a quote for an unattended cremation with no ceremony.
Cemetery costs can change the burial budget considerably
A funeral-home quote does not necessarily buy the grave or pay for the burial itself. California’s Cemetery and Funeral Bureau identifies separate costs for the plot, opening and closing the grave, possible endowment care, and any cemetery-required outer burial container. Plot prices vary both between cemeteries and within a cemetery. See the Bureau’s consumer guide.
For a concrete example, Tracy Public Cemetery’s Schulte location price list, effective January 1, 2026, lists:
- Standard grave without a pre-poured foundation: $1,750
- Endowment care for a standard grave: $900
- Standard single opening and closing: $1,500
- Mandatory standard vault, including handling: $900
Those four items total $5,050, before the funeral home, casket, marker and any applicable extra charges. This is one cemetery’s example, not a California cemetery average. The district also has eligibility restrictions for out-of-district purchases and an $800 nonresident fee where applicable.
For burial, build your estimate this way:
Funeral-home services + casket + cemetery rights + opening/closing + required liner or vault + marker and installation + taxes and other selected items.
If a grave or another item was prepaid, ask what the existing agreement actually covers rather than assuming the remaining burial costs are paid.
How to get a comparable local quote
Ask two or three providers to price the same arrangement, rather than asking each for its “average funeral.” You can say:
“Please send your current General Price List and an itemized total for this arrangement. Include pickup from the place of death, the container or casket, refrigeration, crematory charges if applicable, permits, death certificates, taxes and any mileage or after-hours fees. Please identify anything billed separately.”
For burial, request a separate written cemetery estimate. For cremation, specify whether you want no ceremony, a memorial after cremation, or a service with the body present.
Under the FTC Funeral Rule, you can obtain prices by telephone, keep an itemized General Price List when visiting, and select individual goods and services instead of accepting a package. A funeral home cannot charge a handling fee for a casket or urn bought elsewhere. A casket is not legally required for cremation; providers offering cremation must make alternative containers available.
California does not generally require embalming. If a funeral establishment holds an unembalmed body for more than 24 hours, it must refrigerate it, according to the state consumer guide. Ask when storage charges begin and whether your chosen viewing arrangements require additional preparation.
Before signing, check the written total against your budget—including outside vendors and cemetery costs. If it is too high, ask for a revised quote that removes specific optional items or changes the service format. The funeral arrangements checklist can help you keep those decisions organized.
