Average Cost of a Funeral in Georgia: Benchmarks and Local Prices
Compare Georgia funeral cost benchmarks with published cremation prices, then budget separately for cemetery charges and other extras.

A regional benchmark for Georgia is about $8,000 for a funeral with viewing and burial, or $6,100 for viewing and cremation—but those figures reflect 2023, not an all-in 2026 quote. NFDA’s 2023 survey reported South Atlantic regional medians of $8,023 and $6,103, respectively. Georgia is included in that region; these are not Georgia-only averages. Direct cremation without a viewing or ceremony is a different, usually less expensive arrangement. Published Georgia examples below range from $1,250 to $4,180, with different inclusions. Those examples show why comparing local quotes matters more than relying on one statewide number.
What the funeral cost benchmark includes
The burial benchmark covers the funeral home’s basic services, transfer of the body, embalming and other preparation, viewing, funeral ceremony, hearse, service vehicle, printed memorial package and metal casket. It excludes a burial vault, cemetery interment, a marker or monument, and cash-advance items such as flowers and newspaper notices.
The viewing-and-cremation benchmark includes preparation, viewing and a ceremony, as well as the cremation fee, alternative cremation container and urn. It is not a direct-cremation price. These definitions and exclusions appear in the NFDA survey release.
For national context, NFDA’s 2025 report still uses its 2023 survey figures: $8,300 for viewing and burial, $6,280 for viewing and cremation, and $2,750 for direct cremation with a container supplied by the funeral home. A median is the midpoint of the surveyed figures, not an arithmetic average. Source: NFDA’s 2025 report
Published Georgia prices: compare the inclusions
These prices were checked on October 19, 2026. They are individual providers’ published charges, not a representative statewide survey or provider recommendations. Confirm the current total before making arrangements.
| Provider and location | Published direct-cremation price | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phinazee and Son, Waynesboro | $1,250 | The January 1, 2026 price list names removal, local transportation to the crematory, staff services and an urn. It does not clearly identify the crematory fee or cremation container as included; confirm both. |
| Georgia Funeral Care, Acworth | $1,695 | Includes documents, pickup within 40 miles, an alternative container, cremation and a temporary plastic box. Mileage beyond 40 miles is $4 per mile. |
| Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Bass Road, Macon | $4,180 with cardboard container | The October 1, 2026 list includes pickup, refrigeration, transportation to the crematory and the crematory fee. The $3,985 base price assumes the purchaser supplies a suitable container. |

Service choices also change the bill. Georgia Funeral Care lists cremation with a memorial service or celebration of life at $2,390, including its facility and staff for a ceremony and short visitation. Snow’s lists immediate burial with its minimum casket at $6,605, without rites or ceremonies; cemetery costs still need to be added. These are different arrangements, not equivalent packages.
Add the cemetery bill separately
For burial, request a separate written cemetery quote covering:
- The burial space, if the family does not already own the interment rights.
- Opening and closing the grave.
- Any required grave liner or vault, including installation.
- The marker, inscription, installation and applicable permit fees.
- Weekend, holiday or after-hours charges.
For a concrete local example, Savannah’s 2026 municipal cemetery schedule lists a single burial space at $1,650, including perpetual care and a recording fee. Adult interment is $1,450 at the standard rate, or $1,800 on Sundays and holidays. A new single space plus standard adult interment therefore totals $3,100, before a marker and other applicable charges. The schedule also offers a lower prime rate for qualifying weekday arrangements; ask the cemetery whether your timing qualifies. These are Savannah municipal prices, not Georgia-wide rates. Owning a plot does not mean the interment service is already paid for. Cremated remains placed in a cemetery can also incur space, interment or niche fees.
Get a quote you can actually compare
Call two or three providers and describe the same arrangement each time:
“We are comparing prices for [direct cremation / immediate burial / a funeral with viewing and burial]. Please give us the total for that arrangement, including the required container, transportation, preparation and any crematory fee. What is excluded, and what circumstances would increase the price?”
Ask about death certificates, extra mileage, additional refrigeration, delivery of cremated remains and payment-processing charges. For packages, confirm whether the basic-services fee is already included rather than adding it twice.
Under the FTC Funeral Rule, funeral homes must provide price information by telephone, give you an itemized General Price List when you visit, and provide a written statement of your selections and total before you pay. You may choose individual goods and services rather than accepting a package.
Georgia’s Attorney General also states that embalming is not legally required in Georgia, and burial vaults and grave liners are not required by state law. A funeral home may require embalming for a particular viewing arrangement, and a cemetery may require an outer burial container; ask for the applicable requirement in writing.
